Utah Tech women’s tennis defeats Colorado Mesa with clean sweep in Grand Junction

Utah Tech women’s tennis team secured a 7-0 victory over Colorado Mesa on Friday at the Elliott Tennis Center in Grand Junction. The win ended a two-match losing streak for Utah Tech, which now holds a 4-7 record this season.

The Trailblazers started strong in doubles play. Mariana Zurita Berdecio and Ana Gutierrez Sampere won their match 6-1, as did Cameron Hendrix and Ilse Fernanda Elechiguerra Ortega. Maya Inouye and Nutsa Tsintsadze also contributed with a 6-3 win in doubles competition.

In singles matches, Ana Gutierrez Sampere defeated Valentina Gonzalez 6-1, 6-2 to earn the first point for Utah Tech. Nutsa Tsintsadze followed with a 6-2, 6-2 win at Singles No. 4. Freshman Cameron Hendrix improved her singles record to a team-best 6-3 by winning her match against Catalina Ballon with scores of 7-6 (7-2), 6-1.

Ilse Fernanda Elechiguerra Ortega clinched the overall victory for Utah Tech by defeating Jane Steur of Colorado Mesa 6-0, 6-4, ending her own five-match singles losing streak.

This match was the first of two meetings between Utah Tech and Colorado Mesa this season; they will play again on April 9 in a doubleheader.

The Trailblazers are scheduled to conclude their trip to Colorado with a match against Colorado College on Saturday, February 28 at 9:30 a.m.
