The Utah Tech Trailblazers will play their last non-conference softball game of the season against Brigham Young University on April 14 at Gail Miller Field in Provo. The matchup is scheduled for an 11:30 a.m. start and marks the second meeting between the two teams this season.
This contest holds significance as it gives both teams another opportunity to prepare before resuming conference play. Utah Tech, with a record of 16-24, will be looking to improve its standing after splitting six games during a recent road trip in Southern California.
Earlier this year, BYU defeated Utah Tech 10-1 in five innings at the Trailblazer Classic held on March 13. In their most recent outings, Utah Tech swept a doubleheader against CSU Bakersfield and secured an 11-9 win over San Diego but dropped three games to California Baptist, including a walk-off loss.
BYU enters the game with a record of 14-26 after sweeping Houston at home last weekend and currently holds a three-way tie for eighth place in the Big 12 Conference alongside Iowa State and Arizona State. The Cougars have scored an average of 4.3 runs per game this season while hitting .267 as a team. Sophomore infielder Danica Acosta leads BYU with a .330 batting average, while sophomore Ilove’a Brittingham has recorded ten home runs and leads the team with thirty-two runs batted in.
On the pitching side, junior Gianna Mares leads BYU’s staff with ninety strikeouts and also tops her team in wins (six), innings pitched (ninety-two), and starts (seventeen). Despite these efforts, BYU’s pitching staff has allowed opponents to hit .334 this season with an earned run average of 7.75.
Historically, Utah Tech has struggled against BYU, holding an all-time record of zero wins and eleven losses since their first meeting in 2021. The Trailblazers are also winless in Provo across five games played there.
