The Utah Tech Trailblazers swept a Friday doubleheader against the Southern Utah Thunderbirds on March 27, winning 10-0 in five innings in game one and 13-5 in six innings in game two at Karl Brooks Field.
The wins are significant for the Trailblazers, who improved their record to 13-20 overall and 3-2 in Western Athletic Conference play. The team recorded a total of 26 hits across both games, including nine extra-base hits.
In the first game, senior Lakaiya-Braessia Kahahawai-Kekona went three-for-three at the plate, while Naya Taylor and Kennedy Embrey each contributed two hits. Pitcher Sauren Garton secured her fourth win of the season by throwing a complete game shutout, allowing only four hits and striking out four batters over five innings.
Game two featured career-high performances from senior Sadie Phillips with four hits and four runs scored, and sophomore Kinley Pappas with four hits and six runs batted in. Embrey added three hits, including a grand slam that helped her achieve a career-high five RBIs. Lexie Wilson earned her sixth win of the season by pitching the final 4.1 innings in relief for starter Delaney Wright.
The first game saw Utah Tech take control early with a seven-run second inning that included home runs from Summer Sanderson and key RBI singles from several players. In the second contest, Southern Utah initially led by five runs before Utah Tech responded with thirteen unanswered runs over their last four turns at bat. Grand slams by Embrey and Pappas highlighted the offensive surge.
The Trailblazers will attempt to complete a series sweep against Southern Utah on Saturday at noon.
