The Utah Tech Trailblazers swept the CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners in a softball doubleheader on April 7, winning the first game 9-3 and the second game 6-2 at the Roadrunner Softball Complex.
The wins are significant for Utah Tech (16-24), who recorded ten hits in the first game and eight in the second, while also tying their single-game program record with nine stolen bases. These achievements highlight both offensive strength and aggressive base running by the team.
Senior Sadie Phillips led Utah Tech with two-hit performances in both games, adding multiple stolen bases and scoring runs. Senior Baylee Howley contributed two doubles, two RBIs, a run scored, and a walk in game one. Another senior, Lakaiya-Braessia Kahahawai-Kekona, scored twice and hit a double in game one before driving in three runs with two singles and stealing two bases during game two.
In pitching performances, senior Sauren Garton threw her fifth complete game of the season for Utah Tech by limiting CSU Bakersfield (8-30) to four hits and striking out seven batters during game one. Sophomore Lexie Wilson improved her record to 7-2 after pitching her fourth complete game of the season for Utah Tech during game two.
Game summaries showed that after falling behind early in both contests, Utah Tech responded with strong rallies. In particular, Maka Sonognini scored following a stolen base attempt by Pappas to start their comeback in Game One. The Trailblazers continued their momentum throughout both games with key hits from Howley, McKown, Caldwell, Jones, Pappas—and timely pitching—to secure victories.
Looking ahead, Utah Tech will have a break this weekend before returning to action next Tuesday against BYU (11-25) at 11:30 a.m. in Provo.
