The Utah Tech Trailblazers lost to Brigham Young University by a score of 9-6 on April 14 at Gail Miller Field in Provo, Utah.
The game drew nearly 2,000 fans for Kids Day as the Trailblazers (16-25) continued their recent strong hitting performance. The team recorded double-digit hits for the third time in four games, finishing with a total of 11 hits. Four players—Lakaiya-Braessia Kahahawai-Kekona, Brooklyn Dowdle, Drew McKown, and Kennedy Embrey—each collected two hits. Naya Taylor contributed a double, Gabi Giroux hit a triple, and Lauren Jones added an RBI single.
Pitching duties were shared among three Trailblazers. Sauren Garton made her team-leading eighteenth start and pitched the first three innings. Riley Price followed with two and two-thirds innings before Delaney Wright came in for the final out of the sixth inning.
BYU took an early lead with three runs in the first inning on two home runs and added another run in the second to go up 4-0. Utah Tech responded with an RBI single from Kahahawai-Kekona in the third inning. The fourth inning saw three more runs from Utah Tech to tie the game at four after RBIs from Howley and McKown along with Jones’s RBI single.
BYU regained control with a three-run home run in their half of the fourth inning to make it 7-4. Howley’s RBI single brought Utah Tech closer in the fifth before Kahahawai-Kekona’s sixth-inning RBI narrowed BYU’s lead to one run at 7-6. The Trailblazers loaded the bases later that inning but could not capitalize as Embrey grounded out to end their threat.
The Cougars secured their win by adding two more runs—a solo home run and an RBI single—in the bottom of the sixth while retiring Utah Tech batters consecutively in the seventh.
Looking ahead, Utah Tech will return home this weekend for a series against UT Arlington (18-21 overall; 6-6 Western Athletic Conference) at Karl Brooks Field.
