The Utah Tech Trailblazers lost both games of a doubleheader against the Tarleton State Texans at the Tarleton Softball Complex on April 24. The Trailblazers fell in a close first game, 2-1, and were defeated in the second game, 8-3.
These results bring Utah Tech’s record to 16-30 overall and 3-11 in Western Athletic Conference play. The Texans improved their record to 33-18 overall and 11-3 in conference games. Despite the losses, Utah Tech showed resilience throughout both matchups.
In the opening game, senior Lakaiya-Braessia Kahahawai-Kekona hit her fourth home run of the season and later contributed two singles and an RBI in game two. Kennedy Embrey and Sadie Phillips each recorded two hits, while Kinley Pappas added her team-leading eighteenth double. Pitcher Sauren Garton threw her sixth complete game of the season during game one, limiting Tarleton State to three hits over six innings with two strikeouts.
Game one saw Tarleton take an early lead with two runs in the third inning following an RBI single by Mariah Debose. Kahahawai-Kekona broke up a shutout bid with a leadoff home run in the seventh inning for Utah Tech before three consecutive outs ended their comeback attempt.
In game two, Embrey drove in a run with a double before three home runs by Tarleton shifted momentum. Kahahawai-Kekona added another RBI single as Jayda Gleave also contributed an RBI hit for Utah Tech. Three pitchers took turns on the mound: Lexie Wilson started, followed by Delaney Wright and Cemryn Pickett finishing out relief appearances.
The series will conclude with another matchup between Utah Tech and Tarleton State scheduled for Saturday at 11 a.m.
