Utah Tech lost to UNLV by a score of 8-6 on April 14 at Bruce Hurst Field. The Trailblazers were unable to overcome two high-scoring innings by the Rebels, which proved decisive in the outcome.
The game was tied with no runs through the first two innings before UNLV scored three runs in both the third and fourth frames, building a 6-0 lead. Utah Tech responded with a run in the fourth inning on an RBI groundout from Mays Madsen and mounted a larger rally in the sixth inning, scoring four runs after opening with three consecutive hits. Ty Johnsen and Finnegan Stewart hit back-to-back doubles, helping narrow the gap to one run.
In total, Utah Tech sent ten batters to the plate during their sixth-inning surge. Additional runs came from singles by Petey Soto Jr. and Hudson Manwaring as well as a wild pitch that allowed Johnsen to score. Despite these efforts, UNLV added two more insurance runs in the ninth inning.
The Trailblazers attempted another comeback in their final turn at bat when Miller Durham walked and Stewart hit his second double of the night. Madsen followed with an opposite field single that brought Durham home, but reliever Ryan Marton retired the last two hitters for his first save.
Stewart led Utah Tech offensively by going 3-for-4 with a walk, one RBI, one run scored, and two doubles. Manwaring, Durham, and Madsen each collected two hits as part of Utah Tech’s twelve-hit performance.
Utah Tech will finish its eight-game homestand on Wednesday night against Washington State at Bruce Hurst Field.
