Utah Tech’s women’s softball team split its games on the second day of the Lyman Classic, held Saturday at Karl Brooks Field in St. George. The Trailblazers lost their opening game 9-0 to UC Davis before securing a 10-8 comeback win over CSU Bakersfield.
In the first matchup, Utah Tech (now 5-9 on the season) was limited to five hits by UC Davis. Drew McKown recorded two singles in three at-bats for the Trailblazers. Pitcher Riley Price started and threw six innings before Lexie Wilson took over in the seventh inning.
UC Davis jumped out early with a leadoff home run and extended its lead with three runs in the third inning. The Aggies added another run in the sixth and capped their scoring with four more in the seventh, including a three-run home run by Alyssa Dethlefson—her second homer of the game.
The Trailblazers rebounded in their second contest against CSU Bakersfield, tallying 12 hits overall and seeing four players post multi-hit games. Gabi Giroux led offensively with a 3-for-4 performance, while Maka Sonognini contributed a solo home run and Jayda Gleave hit a three-run homer. Kinley Pappas added a double, triple, two RBIs, and scored three times.
After falling behind 8-2 following a six-run fourth inning by CSU Bakersfield, Utah Tech responded with eight unanswered runs to complete the comeback. In the bottom of the fourth inning, freshmen Naya Taylor and Summer Sanderson each singled before Gleave delivered her three-run home run. Pappas then tripled for another RBI and later scored on an error.
The Trailblazers tied the game at eight in the sixth when Pappas hit an RBI double. Lauren Jones followed with an RBI groundout, and Giroux singled up the middle for another run. Freshman pitcher Delaney Wright secured her first career win by throwing 3.1 shutout innings to close out the game.
Utah Tech will finish its participation in the Lyman Classic on Sunday afternoon against Weber State (2-11), with first pitch scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
