The Southern Utah Thunderbirds achieved several event victories at the Bryan Clay Invitational, held in Azusa, California, according to an announcement on April 18. The team recorded top finishes in both track and field events as it builds momentum for the postseason.
The women’s team was led by Audrey Hales, who won the 800 meters with a time of 2:10.57. Kimberly Winward also performed well in the same event with a time of 2:09.85 and later ran the 400 meters in 55.82 seconds. Freshman Riley Gough captured first place in the high jump with a clearance of 1.63 meters (5’4¼”), while Chloe Bingham finished among the top ten with a jump of 1.64 meters.
On the men’s side, Isley Gutierrez placed sixth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.17 seconds and also competed in the preliminaries for the 100 meters, running it in 10.94 seconds. Ashton Miller led Southern Utah’s efforts in the men’s 400-meter hurdles by finishing with a time of 53.11 seconds, followed by teammates Matthew Hayes and Jared Sharp.
Other notable performances included Divin Kalanga’s long jump mark of 7.17 meters (23’6¼”) and Ace Brown’s contributions both on track—running times of 48.87 seconds for the 400 meters and clocking at under twenty-two seconds for his heat—and field events alike.
Relay teams from both men’s and women’s squads posted competitive times throughout their respective events as Southern Utah looks ahead to further competitions this season.
