Southern Utah University’s women’s basketball team is set to face Utah Tech on Saturday, February 28, in St. George. The game marks the final regular-season meeting between the teams and could allow Southern Utah to complete a season sweep of their rivals for the second consecutive year.
The Thunderbirds are coming off an important victory that moved them into second place in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) standings. Head Coach Tracy Mason commented on the upcoming challenge: “Utah Tech is always a tough opponent, and we’ll have to play them on the road this time. We’ve had a great week of practice to prepare, and I think the team understands how important this game is for us.”
Southern Utah currently holds a 19-8 overall record with an 11-4 mark in conference play. Their recent success includes eight wins in their last nine games and a four-game winning streak. If they secure victories in their final three matchups, they will clinch the top seed and become regular-season champions.
This season, Southern Utah has shown strength offensively, averaging more than 79 points over their past four games while maintaining strong shooting percentages both from inside and beyond the arc. They also lead with solid rebounding numbers despite not having significant height advantages.
Juniors Ava Uhrich and Brooklyn Fely have each recorded nine double-doubles this season, contributing heavily both in scoring and rebounding. Sophomore Sierra Chambers leads Southern Utah with an average of 15.1 points per game and has surpassed 400 points for her sophomore campaign.
Historically, Southern Utah has performed well against Utah Tech, holding a 15-7 all-time record in head-to-head matchups. This season alone, they have already beaten Utah Tech twice—once at home after overcoming a double-digit deficit for a convincing win, and again during a lower-scoring contest that featured strong defensive play.
Utah Tech enters Saturday’s contest with an overall record of 8-18 (3-13 WAC). The Trailblazers have found more success at home but recently lost on the road to Abilene Christian. While struggling as a team on both offense and defense this year, individual players such as Kaylee Borden (averaging 15.5 points per game) and Chardonnay Hartley (5.2 assists per game) have delivered notable performances.
