The Southern Utah Thunderbirds track and field team will conclude its outdoor regular season by hosting the SUU Coliseum Championships, according to an announcement on April 29. The event will serve as the team’s final opportunity to improve personal bests before entering postseason competition.
The meet is significant for athletes seeking momentum ahead of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Championships. Competing at home offers a familiar environment and may help participants deliver stronger performances.
Head Coach Eric Houle said, “We’re excited to compete at home. If the weather cooperates, performances will keep improving. More than anything, it’s nice to be at home instead of on the road.”
Recent results from the men’s team include notable finishes in hurdles and jumps. Isley Gutierrez placed sixth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.17 seconds and also ran a 10.94 in the 100-meter prelims. Tyler Myrup recorded a time of 14.46 in hurdles, while Ashton Miller led with a time of 53.11 in the 400-meter hurdles, followed by Matthew Hayes and Jared Sharp.
On the women’s side, Audrey Hales won the 800 meters with a time of 2:10.57, while Kimberly Winward posted strong marks in both middle-distance events and sprints. Freshman Riley Gough took first place in high jump with a clearance of 1.63 meters.
As teams prepare for postseason meets, hosting this championship provides athletes one last chance to qualify or set new records before traveling for further competitions.
