Southern Utah University lost both games of a doubleheader against Utah Tech on March 27, falling 10-0 in the first game and dropping a 13-5 decision in the second. The Thunderbirds now hold a record of 15-20 overall and are 1-4 in conference play.
The losses are significant as they impact Southern Utah’s standing within their conference, with the team seeking to rebound after struggling both offensively and defensively. The series offers an opportunity for the Thunderbirds to make adjustments as they continue their season.
Arianna Ramirez led Southern Utah’s offense with three hits and a run scored in Game 2, after also collecting a hit in the opener. Michaella Salvatierra and Alayah Toscano each contributed multiple hits during the second game. In addition, Taralyn Ollison drove in a run and scored, Kassidy Munoz added an RBI, while Michelle De La Cruz had two runs scored and one RBI. After being limited to four hits in Game 1, Southern Utah improved at the plate with eleven hits during Game 2.
Pitchers Hannah Duncan and Avery Nielson took losses for Southern Utah. In Game 1, Ramirez doubled but was left stranded before Utah Tech broke out with seven runs in the second inning. The Trailblazers extended their lead through consistent hitting, ultimately ending the game early under run-rule conditions.
In Game 2, Southern Utah built an early lead behind timely hitting from Ramirez, Becerra, Munoz, Ollison, and De La Cruz but could not hold off a comeback by Utah Tech. A five-run fourth inning by the Trailblazers shifted momentum before Kinley Pappas’ three-run homer sealed their win.
The teams will meet again on Saturday at noon as Southern Utah looks to bounce back from Friday’s defeats.
