The Southern Utah Thunderbirds Cheer and Stunt Team announced on Mar. 25 that tryouts for the 2026-27 squad will be held on April 10 and April 11 at the American First Event Center and Harris Center.
The announcement is important for students interested in joining a collegiate cheerleading program, as it provides details about requirements, schedules, and opportunities available through participation.
Tryouts are open to advanced skilled cheerleaders with experience in coed stunting. The team is comprised of eight to ten pairs, each consisting of one female and one male member. Emphasis is placed on partner stunting, basket tosses, and pyramid building. Female candidates must have skills such as stretch full-downs and optional flyer stunts like arabesque or scorpion. Tumbling requirements include a standing back handspring (with standing tuck recommended) and round-off back handspring back tuck. Male candidates are expected to perform toss hands press Liberty in stunting and a standing tuck in tumbling.
All participants must be full-time Southern Utah University students enrolled in at least twelve semester hours with a minimum GPA of 2.5. Team members should expect to practice six to ten hours per week starting in August (exact date to be determined), compete at Nationals scheduled for February 20-21, 2027, and perform at all home football, volleyball, men’s basketball, and women’s basketball games.
