Southern Utah University’s women’s softball team lost both games of a doubleheader against UT Arlington on April 24, falling by scores of 6-4 and 6-5. The Thunderbirds now have a season record of 19-25 and are 5-9 in Western Athletic Conference play.
The close results highlight the competitive nature of the matchups, with Southern Utah collecting more hits than their opponent but unable to secure victories. Freshman Savannah Lira led the Thunderbirds at the plate, recording four hits and three runs batted in over the two games. Sophomore Michaella Salvatierra also contributed four hits, including two doubles and scored twice. Junior Arianna Ramirez remained consistent offensively with two hits in each game and added two RBIs.
In game one, Southern Utah took an early lead when Lira singled home Ramirez in the second inning. UT Arlington responded quickly, scoring twice to take a 2–1 advantage after two innings. Isabella Knight tied it up for Southern Utah with a solo home run before aggressive baserunning allowed UT Arlington to reclaim the lead at 3–2. The Thunderbirds briefly went ahead again after Lira’s sixth-inning homer made it 4–3, but UT Arlington rallied with three runs in their half of the inning—including a decisive two-run homer—to win 6–4.
Game two saw Southern Utah start strong with four runs in the first inning on key doubles from Ramirez and Munoz. However, UT Arlington answered back throughout the game, tying it by the second inning and taking their first lead in the third. After Becerra’s RBI single tied things up at five apiece for Southern Utah, Neises’ double put UT Arlington ahead for good as they secured another narrow victory.
