Southern Utah University’s men’s golf team finished seventh at the Western Athletic Conference Men’s Golf Championship, according to an April 29 announcement. The tournament took place at Stonebridge Ranch Country Club in McKinney, Texas, where the Thunderbirds posted rounds of 303, 307, and 305 for a total score of 915 over three days.
The event marked the conclusion of Southern Utah’s season. The team competed against other conference members, with Tarleton State securing the championship title. Charlie Gillespie led Southern Utah individually by finishing in nineteenth place with a total score of 226 (+10). Gillespie recorded rounds of 77 and 79 before ending with a strong final round of 70, which was also the lowest round for his team during the tournament.
Uy Doan finished just behind Gillespie in twentieth place after shooting rounds of 75, 76, and 77 for a total score of 228 (+12). Braylon Bingham contributed with scores totaling to fifteen over par (231), while Jing-Cheng (Jarell) Wang ended one stroke back at sixteen over par (232). Sky Moon completed Southern Utah’s lineup with a three-round sum of 241 (+25).
Throughout the championship’s fifty-four holes, Southern Utah made twenty-seven birdies and two eagles. The Thunderbirds ranked third among all teams for most pars made during the event with one hundred fifty-two. Wang led his teammates by making seven birdies; Moon followed closely with six birdies. Bingham scored both eagles for Southern Utah while Gillespie recorded thirty-seven pars—the highest among all players in the field.
As their season comes to an end following this performance at the conference championship, Southern Utah looks ahead to building on these results next year.
