Southern Utah University’s men’s basketball team is preparing to host Utah Tech in Cedar City on Saturday. This will be the first time this season the two teams face off at SUU’s America First Event Center, where Utah Tech has never secured a win.
Southern Utah holds an undefeated 5-0 record against the Trailblazers when playing at home. Earlier this season, both games between these teams took place in St. George, with Southern Utah falling short in each contest. In their most recent matchup, Jaiden Feroah scored a career-high 35 points, but SUU was unable to contain Utah Tech and lost 102-91.
The Thunderbirds have shown strength in offense throughout conference play, ranking second in the league with an average of 75 points per game. However, they are last defensively, allowing opponents to score an average of 78 points per game. The team leads the conference in three-point shooting percentage during league play at nearly 40% and ranks third in overall field goal percentage at 46%. Only Utah Tech has made more three-point shots than Southern Utah during conference play.
Jaiden Feroah and Isaiah Cottrell lead the league in blocked shots this season, with Feroah recording 48 blocks and Cottrell adding 40. Both Elijah Duval and Jaiden Feroah are among the top ten scorers in conference games, averaging 15.4 and 14 points per game respectively. Feroah is also second in rebounds per league game with seven.
Dylan Jones and Tanner Hayhurst are SUU’s leading three-point shooters for the season, with Jones making 52 threes and Hayhurst hitting 48.
Utah Tech enters Saturday’s contest having performed strongly during conference play. They are just half a game behind Utah Valley for first place in the standings and have won eight of their last ten games, currently riding a two-game winning streak.
Transfer forward Ethan Potter leads Utah Tech by averaging 16.2 points and nearly eight rebounds per game while shooting a league-best 59% from the floor. The Trailblazers feature several effective shooters: Chance Trujillo leads with 60 made threes this year, followed by Noah Bolanga (56), Jusaun Holt (47), and Berrett Britton (39).
Utah Tech has distinguished itself defensively by holding opponents to just 27% shooting from beyond the arc during conference games—the best mark in the league. The team emphasizes ball movement and collective defense.
