Southern Utah freshman infielder McKenzy Becerra was named Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week following her performance against Abilene Christian, according to an April 20 announcement from the Thunderbirds Softball team.
Becerra’s recognition comes after a standout weekend in which she helped Southern Utah secure a three-game sweep over Abilene Christian at home. Her efforts are seen as instrumental for the team’s success as they approach the final weeks of regular season play.
Becerra recorded a .700 batting average during the series, collecting seven hits—including two doubles, three singles, and two home runs—while driving in eight runs and scoring four times. Her most notable showing came on Friday when she hit a grand slam and added a two-run homer for six RBIs in one game. She also drew two walks and consistently reached base throughout the weekend.
The freshman’s achievements included setting career highs with both a three-hit game and six RBIs in Southern Utah’s opening matchup against Abilene Christian. Becerra, who hails from Chino Hills, California, has made an immediate impact since joining Southern Utah. Entering last weekend’s games already hitting above .300, she is now batting .326 for the season with 42 hits—seven doubles, two triples, and a team-leading seven home runs—and has driven in 30 runs.
Before joining Southern Utah, Becerra played at Ayala High School where she batted over .450 and earned First Team All-Palomares League honors while helping her team win a league title.
With this latest honor as Player of the Week, Becerra continues to establish herself among top hitters in the conference. The Thunderbirds will continue Western Athletic Conference play on April 24 with a doubleheader against UT Arlington beginning at noon Mountain Time. The series concludes on April 25 at 11:00 a.m., with live stats available through suutbirds.com and broadcasts on ESPN+.
