Southern Utah infielder McKenzy Becerra was named the D1Softball Mid-Major Freshman of the Week on Apr. 21 after her strong performance against Abilene Christian. This is the first time a Southern Utah athlete has received this national honor.
The recognition highlights Becerra’s standout weekend, during which she also earned Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week. Her achievements are part of what is described as one of the most impressive individual weekends in college softball.
Becerra had a .700 batting average for the series, driving in eight runs and scoring four times as Southern Utah swept Abilene Christian. She collected seven hits, including two doubles and two home runs, and reached base with two walks. In the series opener, she hit both a grand slam and a two-run home run, finishing with six RBIs—both career highs.
On a national level, Becerra joins other weekly award winners such as National Player of the Week Jordan Woolery from UCLA, National Pitcher of the Week Kenzie Brown from Arizona State, and National Freshman of the Week Anna Moore from Purdue. The mid-major list also includes Courtney Poulich (Robert Morris) as Player of the Week and Emily Delgado (Southern Illinois) as Pitcher of the Week.
Becerra is from Chino Hills, California and has made an immediate impact in her first season with Southern Utah. She currently holds a .326 batting average with 42 hits this year—including seven doubles, two triples, and a team-leading seven home runs—and has driven in 30 runs.
Her emergence continues to strengthen Southern Utah’s offense as they move into the final stretch of conference play.
