A walk-off single by Baylee Howley led Utah Tech to a 5-4 win over Weber State at Karl Brooks Field on Saturday night. The Trailblazers, now with a 7-11 record, overcame a late deficit after allowing three runs in the top of the seventh inning.
Utah Tech was limited to three hits in the game. Gabi Giroux contributed her third double of the season, while Howley and Sadie Phillips each added singles. Phillips scored twice, and both Drew McKown and Lakaiya-Braessia Kahahawai-Kekona drew two walks each.
Freshman pitcher Delaney Wright threw six innings, holding Weber State to four hits and one earned run while striking out eight batters. Lexie Wilson entered as relief in the seventh inning and secured her fourth win of the season with one inning pitched and one strikeout.
The first three innings were hitless for both teams until Weber State took a 1-0 lead with a sacrifice fly in the fourth. Utah Tech responded in the bottom half of that inning with an RBI double from Giroux and an RBI ground out by Wright to take a 2-1 lead.
After two scoreless innings, Weber State capitalized on an error and a wild pitch in the seventh to go ahead 4-2. In their final at-bat, Utah Tech loaded the bases on three consecutive walks. Kinley Pappas and Phillips scored on another fielding error by Weber State’s first baseman. Two batters later, Howley singled to center field, bringing home Kahahawai-Kekona for the winning run.
Utah Tech will conclude its participation in the Beehive Classic against Utah State on Sunday afternoon at Karl Brooks Field.
