Gavin Glasgow delivered a walk-off grand slam in the ninth inning, giving Utah Tech Baseball a 6-4 win over Northern Colorado at Bruce Hurst Field on Sunday. This victory completed a four-game sweep for the Trailblazers and improved their record to 11-1 for the season.
The team’s current 11-1 start marks its best since joining NCAA Division I, and is now the second-best start in program history, behind only a 12-1 opening in 2013. The performance also surpasses their previous strong beginning of 10-1 in 2016.
Utah Tech began scoring early when Ryan Kroepel hit a two-out home run in the first inning. In the third inning, Petey Soto Jr. reached base after being hit by a pitch, advanced through steals and fly outs, and scored on Gavin Glasgow’s sacrifice fly.
Northern Colorado pitchers limited Utah Tech to three hits and seven base runners through seven innings. However, Northern Colorado took control with three runs in the fifth inning and added another run in the eighth to lead 4-2 entering the final frame.
In the bottom of the ninth, Mays Madsen drew an eight-pitch walk before Soto Jr. singled to move him to third. After a pitching change and another walk loaded the bases, Glasgow hit Gus Allred’s fastball over the left field wall for his first home run as a Trailblazer.
Petey Soto Jr. led Utah Tech with two hits on Sunday and finished the series batting .500 with five RBIs and two stolen bases. Gavin Glasgow recorded five RBIs on Sunday—a career high—and his game-winning homer was Utah Tech’s first walk-off grand slam since Tanner Morache achieved one during a game against Saint Martin’s on February 21, 2016.
On the mound, Brandon Kosel started for Utah Tech but did not factor into the decision after pitching more than four scoreless innings. Ethan Gardner struck out four batters across nearly three innings of relief work, while Talan Kelly earned his second win of the season by striking out two over 1.1 innings.
Utah Tech will conclude its homestand next weekend with four games against Austin Peay.
